Why Raleigh’s Fall Allergy Season Often Begins Early
Fall allergies are closely tied to weather patterns.
When Raleigh experiences warm days deep into late summer, plants continue producing pollen. Humid weather can also encourage mold growth, particularly after periods of rain. Across the Research Triangle, these conditions often create overlapping allergy seasons where summer allergens haven’t fully disappeared before fall allergens arrive.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that longer and more intense pollen seasons are being observed in many areas as growing seasons extend and frost arrives later in the year.2
How does that change things? You may start experiencing allergy symptoms in early August instead of September.
Three Common Fall Allergens Around Raleigh
Ragweed
Ragweed is usually the biggest fall allergy trigger.
You’re most likely to encounter it:
- Along roadsides
- Open fields
- Construction sites
- Undeveloped land around the Raleigh area
Common symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion, postnasal drip and watery eyes.
The challenging part is that ragweed pollen can travel long distances on the wind, so you don’t need to be standing next to the plant to be affected.
Mold Spores
Fall leaves create ideal conditions for mold growth.
You may encounter mold spores around:
- Leaf piles
- Wooded parks
- Damp yards
- Walking trails following rainy weather
Symptoms can include congestion, coughing, throat irritation and itchy eyes. Many people mistake mold allergies for an early seasonal cold.
Weed Pollens
Pigweed and other fall weeds remain active well into the season.
These allergens are often present in:
- Vacant lots
- Rural edges of Wake County
- Parks with unmanaged vegetation
- Areas surrounding hiking trails
Symptoms frequently mirror other seasonal allergies, making testing helpful when the trigger isn’t obvious.
Do Fall Allergies Usually Start With Nasal Symptoms?
Yes. Congestion, sneezing and a runny nose are often the earliest signs of fall allergies, sometimes appearing weeks before cooler weather arrives. Many people initially assume they’re developing a cold.
Can Weather Changes Increase Allergy Symptoms?
Yes. Windy days spread pollen farther, while humidity can increase mold exposure. Many patients notice symptoms fluctuate significantly from one day to the next, depending on local weather conditions.
When Over-The-Counter Medications Aren’t Enough
Many people manage seasonal allergies successfully with antihistamines or nasal sprays.
