Balloon Dilation of Eustachian Tube (BDET)

The Eustachian tubes connect the middle ear to the throat, and poor drainage in this area can result in muffled hearing, pressure and discomfort. One option for treating Eustachian tube dysfunction is balloon dilation, which can often provide effective results for those with chronic ear issues.

Symptoms of Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

  • Muffled hearing, similar to being underwater
  • Ear pain
  • Pressure or fullness in the ear
  • Clicking, popping or ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
  • Dizziness, vertigo or balance problems

Candidates for BDET

Balloon dilation of the Eustachian tubes is designed for adults dealing with chronic dysfunction in this part of the ear. Poor drainage from a blocked Eustachian tube may result in frequent middle ear infections.

It can also be helpful for adults with barotrauma sensitivity and for those with recurring symptoms after ear tubes.

How BDET Works

During the procedure, a small catheter with a deflated balloon attached at the tip is passed through the nose and gently guided into the Eustachian tube opening. Once in place, it is inflated for 2 minutes to widen the Eustachian tube. The goal is to help restore normal function and provide long-term relief.

If you are experiencing chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction, balloon dilation may help relieve your symptoms. Our team at Raleigh Capitol Ear, Nose, Throat & Allergy is here to support you through this process.
